The Sketch
I was fortunate to have creative freedom with this figure. It seemed appropriate to have a carpenter emerging from a log.
The Log
What a beast! Purchased in winter (thank you to Old Dogwood Lumber).
Rough Carving Complete
The Chainsaw is quite the tool. It reminds me of a guitar player; it's easy blow constant solos, but the song is more memorable when you control the adrenalin.
Hollow Out Back
Removing the core creates stability, speeds drying time and reduces weight.
Stabilizing the Wood
Handmade dowel and glue strengthen the more serious faults.
Carving Complete
The smell of Yellow Cedar is everywhere.
Colour and Sealer Added
I used layers of Linseed Oil followed by Shellac. Areas that I wanted darker had dyes added to the Linseed Oil.
Comparison
I wasn't required to make him identical to the tiny figure, but the proportions are pretty close considering I just "eyeballed it" with a chainsaw.
Joseph Stands Out
The human figure can be a magical thing.
