Joseph the Carpenter Dimensions (inches): 24w 24d 72h Back story: Joseph was a carpenter who lived in the town of Nazareth in the Roman province of Galilee. He lived during the reign of Augustus Caesar, was of the Hebrew tribe of Judah, with a lineage going back to King David. He married Mary, a girl from the same tribe and was to become the legal father of Jesus Christ. He raised the child as his own, preparing him as best he could with a trade and a good set of morals. Is any job more important? |
 The SketchI was fortunate to have creative freedom with this figure. It seemed appropriate to have a carpenter emerging from a log.  The LogWhat a beast! Purchased in winter (thank you to Old Dogwood Lumber).  Rough Carving CompleteThe Chainsaw is quite the tool. It reminds me of a guitar player; it's easy blow constant solos, but the song is more memorable when you control the adrenalin.  Hollow Out BackRemoving the core creates stability, speeds drying time and reduces weight.  Stabilizing the WoodHandmade dowel and glue strengthen the more serious faults.  Carving CompleteThe smell of Yellow Cedar is everywhere.  Colour and Sealer AddedI used layers of Linseed Oil followed by Shellac. Areas that I wanted darker had dyes added to the Linseed Oil.  ComparisonI wasn't required to make him identical to the tiny figure, but the proportions are pretty close considering I just "eyeballed it" with a chainsaw.
